Dec 4, 2019

Washington – Following this morning’s hearing on consumer data privacy convened by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation, Business Roundtable released the following statement from President & CEO Joshua Bolten:

“We applaud Chairman Wicker and his colleagues on the Senate Commerce Committee as they work toward a comprehensive national data privacy law. Consumers deserve meaningful and consistent privacy protections nationwide, and we urge the Chairman and Ranking Member Cantwell to continue working with their colleagues to craft bipartisan legislation.
"Today’s hearing coupled with the proposals that have been introduced or released in the Senate are steps in the legislative process toward strengthening protections for American consumers and establishing a framework to enable continued innovation and growth in the digital economy.”

Developed with input from companies and business leaders across every key sector of the economy, Business Roundtable released a Framework for Consumer Privacy Legislation last December, which includes recommendations on consumer rights to transparency, control and access and to correct and delete personal data.

In September, more than 50 Business Roundtable CEOs urged Congress to pass as soon as possible a comprehensive national data privacy law that strengthens consumer trust, promotes accountability, fosters American innovation and harmonizes regulations.
